Working at home offers many benefits and is in itself a green endeavor. You can set your own hours, avoid aggravating commutes and be home when you’re needed. The green side is you save fuel and emissions by avoiding commutes and many other “on the go” not-so-green activities like takeout coffee and lunch. Still, setting up a home office can bring new challenges as well as some unexpected energy overhead. To save energy and keep operating costs minimal try a green approach to your work space at home.
Power Down
Computers, cell phones and other electronics are now on your electricity bill. Even in standby mode, these office works can be a big drain of energy. The first step to a greener and more energy-efficient office is a smart power strip that lets you power down. Sure you might need to leave the fax on all the time but cut the power to other electronics like computers, scanners and printers when they are not in use.
Virtual Paper
Many corporate offices are saving money, energy and natural resources by opting for digital reproductions instead of print outs. You can do the same at home. Use digital devices to store documents and files. Not only will this save resources, digital storage is condensed and will reduce the need for file cabinets and bulky office furniture. You’ll save paper with less print-outs and also with less paper and petro-based products needed to store them.
Recycled Paper
If you have to use printed work for presentations, business cards or brochures opt for recycled products that use minimal chemicals like chlorine. Make your margins a little wider to maximize space and reduce sheets used. Forget undergrad and print on both sides, if someone has a problem with this tell them its part of your company’s environmental policy.
Recycle and Buy it Again
Even in a minimalist office there will be some waste. Be sure to recycle paper, printer cartridges, batteries, boxes and any other office supplies. When it’s time to restock supplies opt for products with high recycled content.
Think Quality
One of the biggest benefits to working at home is that you can design the office of your dreams. No more cubicle, give yourself a window with a view and green everything for high indoor air quality. Just think, you are going to spend most of your waking hours in this space and you have complete control of the corporate setup. Creating a healthy space will increase your productivity and make work that much more enjoyable.
Start with finishes. Go for low-VOC paints, furniture and carpets. Off-gassing chemicals from typical finishes can contaminant indoor air and cause health problems. It’s harder to call in sick when you are working for yourself so eliminate toxins and keep the air clear.
Create a room that optimizes natural daylight. This will help save on electricity and make the space more pleasant to work in. Also, keep it well ventilated so your mind stays fresh and your lungs healthy.
One Last Thing
Working at home is a wonderful opportunity to take control of finances, health and well-being. Take advantage of the chance to take a break and get outdoors, even for just a few minutes. On the way out, hit the power strip and save energy while you’re refocusing and getting some fresh air.
